Located in the Diamaré department, in the Far North region of Cameroon, the Maroua III District Municipality is a Decentralised Local Authority resulting from the decentralisation process initiated by the Cameroonian government. Established in 2007 and subsequently incorporated into the Maroua Urban Community, it is one of the three district municipalities of the city of Maroua. This administrative structure aims to strengthen local governance, bring public services closer to the people and promote participatory development.
The municipality has an estimated population of around 86,500 inhabitants spread across urban neighbourhoods and outlying villages. It is characterised by a predominantly young population and great socio-cultural diversity, marked by the presence of several ethnic groups, notably the Fulani, the Kanouri, the Guiziga, the Massa, the Mousgoum and the Mofou.
Situated in the eastern part of the city of Maroua, the municipality enjoys a strategic location that facilitates trade and travel to other districts of the city as well as to neighbouring localities. This geographical location fosters the development of economic activities and strengthens its role in the urban dynamics of the regional capital.
The local economy is based mainly on agriculture, livestock farming and trade. The main crops are sorghum, maize, groundnuts, cowpeas, sesame, cotton and market garden produce. The rearing of cattle, small ruminants and poultry also plays an important role, whilst trade, motorbike taxis and small-scale trades contribute to household incomes.
Maroua III has educational, health, water supply, market and road infrastructure that supports local development. However, the municipality still faces challenges relating to infrastructure improvements, access to basic social services and the sustainable management of its natural resources.
Thanks to its agricultural land, natural resources and strategic location within the Maroua conurbation, the municipality possesses significant assets for its development. With the support of its partners and the commitment of the municipal authorities, it aims to enhance its economic attractiveness, improve living conditions for its residents and promote sustainable local development.

Geography
The Maroua III District Municipality is situated in the Diamaré Department, in the heart of Cameroon’s Far North Region. Located in the eastern part of the city of Maroua, it occupies a strategic position that facilitates trade with the city’s other municipalities and surrounding localities.
The terrain is generally flat, characteristic of the Diamaré plains. The landscape is dominated by farmland, grazing areas and Sahelian savannah vegetation. The municipality also possesses natural resources such as arable land, sand, gravel and laterite.
The climate is of the Sudano-Sahelian type, characterised by a short rainy season and a long dry season. Despite relatively low rainfall, the natural conditions allow for the development of agriculture, livestock farming and market gardening, which constitute the commune’s main economic activities.
History
The administrative history of the Maroua III District Municipality is closely linked to the decentralisation process initiated by the Cameroonian government, which aims to strengthen local governance and bring the administration closer to the people. Prior to the decentralisation reforms, the territory of the current municipality fell under the municipal administration of the city of Maroua.
On 24 April 2007, a major milestone was reached with the creation of the Maroua III District Municipality by Presidential Decree No. 2007/117. In 2008, with the establishment of the Maroua Urban Community, it became one of the three district municipalities of the regional capital of the Far North. This move reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening local governance, improving the provision of public services and enabling the municipality to plan and implement its own economic, social and environmental development initiatives, taking into account the specific needs of its residents.

The population of the Maroua III District Municipality is estimated at around 86,574. It is characterised by significant ethnic and cultural diversity, with communities including the Fulani, Kanouri, Guiziga, Massa, Mousgoum and Mofou, as well as other groups from various regions of Cameroon and neighbouring countries. This diversity contributes to the economic vitality and social cohesion within the district.
The main economic activities of the inhabitants are based on agriculture, livestock farming, trade and income-generating activities. The main crops include sorghum, maize, groundnuts, cowpeas, sesame, cotton and market garden produce. The rearing of cattle, small ruminants and poultry also plays an important role, whilst trade, motorbike taxi services and small-scale trades are essential sources of income. Local culture is expressed through local languages, traditional practices and socio-cultural events that strengthen the identity and cohesion of the communities.
